CAMILLE FOURNET

Born in Knokke in 1959, Patrick Corillon lives and works in Paris and Liège, and is represented by the IN SITU FABIENNE LECLERC gallery. His story-installations are featured in the Palais Royal in Belgium, the Toulouse metro and tramways in Nantes, France.

ÉQUINOXES

"To understand my work, you have to enter a state of voluntary suspension of disbelief.
Which means accepting for a moment that the world is not only as we have imagined it up to now, but that anything is possible."

What inspired you to participate in équinoxes

Since childhood, I've felt a special kinship to everyday objects. Although fundamentally I'm not an animist, I do believe that objects are not insensitive. Do inanimate objects have souls? I'd tend to say yes. This project with Camille Fournet allows me to probe more deeply into the inner life of watchstraps and bags. Those two objects, which have the capacity of taking us by the hand or pulling us by the sleeve, may have something to tell us that hasn't yet been revealed.

What is your creative process?

I don't have a very proactive attitude toward my projects. I simply brood over them. As soon as there's the slightest hint of an idea about what I could do, I slip that little seed into a corner of my mind and let it grow as it pleases. I feel its presence all the time, but I never force things. It finds everything it needs there to nurture itself. And when the time is right, it hatches like a chick from its egg.

How would you like people to understand your work?

You have to enter a state of voluntary suspension of disbelief. Which means accepting for a moment that the world is not only as you've imagined it up until now, but that anything is possible. That a sense of wonder can be at the root of every action. Wonderment is not an act of self-consolation or escaping from the world, but rather of placing it in the broadest possible perspective, and thus gaining a sense of wholeness.
